6 Lessons People Learn About Credit Too Late In Life

Over the last year, I have been touring with Cesar & DJ Envy with their Real Estate Seminars and I get asked a lot of questions, but also people tell me things that they wish they had learned sooner.

Now, of course, a lot of people will tell you that you can get by with using just cash, if you want to eventually purchase a home, a car or even apply for a business loan, you need some type of credit to do so.

Let’s be honest, cash is king, but credit is the queen. And we all know who runs the castle. lol.

Banks are not going to stop running your credit to approve you for loans and credit cards. I mean some employers are even running your credit to see if you are eligible to be hired by their company. So don’t think that if you just use cash all the time and don’t establish any positive credit history, that you will be good to go.

I wish that they taught people about credit as a freshman in high school and helped you apply for credit cards so that when you graduate, you already have a couple of years of credit history.

The banks want us to have bad credit so they can charge us more interest.

I’m usually not someone who is going to talk about something until I’ve done it and feel qualified to talk about it, and I’ve now gained enough knowledge about credit where I can share these lessons with you so that you don’t have to go through them. But here is the thing, if you learn this stuff and don’t do any of it, then I can guarantee you that you won’t have a high credit score. You have to actually DO the stuff I am about to tell you if you want to have a strong credit profile.

Stop Using Just Cash – If all you do is use cash, you will never have a strong credit profile or history of anything that you have ever purchased. If you have no credit, then easily apply for a secured credit card for at least $500 and never put more than $100 on it.

Establish Credit Early – The earlier you establish credit the better. But it’s never too late to start. I have a bunch of accounts you can apply for in the link in my bio on Instagram to start building your credit history. Or you can even have a family member add you as an Authorized User on one of their credit cards to gain their history.

Never Co-Sign – This is a must!! Don’t let a college roommate or your cousin convince you to co-sign for them. The minute they stop paying it will damage your credit report. We see this happen all the time.

Don’t Overspend – If you know you can’t pay something back, don’t max out your credit cards and hope that they will go away. Try to keep balances between 10 – 30% of the credit limit. But if you want to truly maximize your credit score, pay them down to 1% of the credit limit.

You Can Travel For Free – Once you start getting approved for credit cards linked to airlines & hotels, you will start earning points that can be used to book travel. Nothing better than booking a round trip ticket and paying $0.
